Address by Petro Kotin, Head of Energoatom, on the 39th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Tragedy

main

39 years have passed since the Chernobyl tragedy. Owing to the heroic actions of the first liquidators of the accident, who sacrificed their health and lives, it was possible to prevent the spread of the consequences of the disaster to most of Ukraine and Europe.

Today, in the conditions of the russian-Ukrainian war, the risks of radiation accidents in Ukraine remain critically high. russia, disregarding all international safety standards, seized the largest Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Europe – the ZNPP.

Having turned it into a military base, the aggressor creates a nuclear threat, cynically launching missiles and drones over the Chernobyl zone and operating power units of other nuclear power plants in Ukraine.

russia became the first country to carry out terrorist attacks on nuclear facilities, but its crimes still remain unpunished.

April 26 – the Chornobyl Tragedy Day – should remind the world of radiation risks that go beyond borders, as well as our shared responsibility to future generations.

We honor the memory of all those people who gave their lives and health, protecting humanity from the consequences of the disaster. May this tragic page of our history, as well as the long-term occupation of the ZNPP by the aggressor, become lessons for the whole world and a call to action for safety.
