The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) once again lost its external power supply. As a result, the plant operated through its emergency diesel generators for approximately one hour. These generators serve as the backup power supply source required to ensure nuclear and radiation safety.
At 2:20 p.m., external power supply to ZNPP was restored.
A similar incident had occurred just a few days earlier, on August 1.
This marks the 12th blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP since the beginning of 2026 and the 24th since the start of russia’s occupation of the plant. In other words, half of all blackouts experienced by the ZNPP during the occupation have occurred in 2026 alone.
Every loss of off-site power poses a direct threat to nuclear and radiation safety. The fact that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant continues to rely on emergency diesel generators is unacceptable; it is another reminder of the critical risks created by the illegal occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
Only the return of the ZNPP to the full controls of Ukraine and its lawful operator, JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”, can guarantee the safe operation of the plant.
