On October 7, the presentation of the first virtual academy of environmental education in Ukraine of a new format, EcoEducation, took place in Kyiv.

The Association of Environmental Professionals (PAEW) in partnership with NNEGC “Energoatom”, the Ukrainian Nuclear Society and the Office of Sustainable Solutions created the project. The virtual academy will serve as an assistant to teachers, a useful resource for students and an effective bridge between theory and practice.

Ecologists, People’s Deputies, representatives of higher education institutions and Energoatom, attended the presentation of the new educational platform. The participants discussed, in particular, the role of nuclear sector in shaping the carbon-neutral future of Ukraine. Experts emphasized that nuclear generation would play a key role in the production of low-carbon power.

First Vice President of the Ukrainian Nuclear Society, Head of Presidential Office of JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom”, Danylo Lavrenov stressed that environmental education was of key importance for nuclear field. It helps students and young specialists not only to better understand the environmental aspects of nuclear power plants and radwaste management systems, but also to assess the real contribution of the nuclear industry to the decarbonization process, energy and climate security, and sustainable development of Ukraine.

“The nuclear industry remains the strategic basis of Ukraine’s energy independence – even in the most difficult times. Its successful development in the coming decades depends on the combination of high technologies and environmental responsibility. Public trust and support for the implementation of advanced technologies without harming the environment considerably depends on how well future environmental specialists understand the advantages and challenges of nuclear energy,” said Danylo Lavrenov.

President of the Association of Environmental Professionals PAEW, Liudmyla Tsyhanok, informed that the EcoEducation platform was changing approaches to environmental education in Ukraine. The training course opens up new opportunities for higher education institutions, businesses and state-owned companies in training specialists capable to implement the principles of sustainable development and green reconstruction in specific projects.

“In the future, this is a “one-click” platform; every student looking for an internship will be able to find it and contact a potential employer. We plan to work on this. Such accessible, open and modern solutions are the future of sustainable development and green reconstruction,” said Liudmyla Tsyhanok.
