The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a resolution entitled “Implications of unstable energy infrastructure critical to safety and security of nuclear power plants in Ukraine.” The document was supported by 20 member states of the agency, opposed by 4, and abstained by 10 countries.
The resolution highlights the risks to nuclear and physical nuclear safety resulting from the russian federation's attacks on energy infrastructure facilities. In particular, it refers to facilities that provide off-site power supply to nuclear power plants – the fourth of the “seven indispensable pillars” of nuclear safety.
“We are grateful to the IAEA Board of Governors for adopting this resolution. The aggressor's actions pose serious risks to the reliable and safe operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The enemy is deliberately attacking substations that provide their off-site power supply. The international community must demand cessation of such attacks for the safety of the entire European continent,” said Energoatom CEO Pavlo Kovtonyuk.
The document also emphasizes the importance of IAEA missions to assess risks and damage to energy infrastructure facilities that are critical to the safe operation of nuclear facilities.
