To mark Vyshyvanka Day, Directorate for Corporate Communications, in cooperation with Primary Trade Union Organization of NNEGC “Energoatom”, once again brought together the children of employees of Directorate and Kyiv-based separated subdivisions for a masterclass “Traditions in Art – Petrykivka Painting”.
Every year, the number of people wishing to join such themed events is steadily growing. This year, 42 children aged 10 to 16 took part in the meet-the artist-event.
Svitlana Mikhno, a graphic artist, painter, member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, and lecturer at the Mykhailo Boichuk Kyiv State Academy of Decorative Applied Arts and Design, conducted the masterclass. The Academy students assisted her.
For many children, that was their first introduction to Petrykivka paining. They learned about the symbolism of the ornaments and the unique features of traditional Ukrainian art, and later created their own artworks. The children were very interested and inspired: they listened carefully to the artisan’s explanations, diligently recreated the painting elements, and rejoiced at their own results.
Hanna Zaiets, Head of Primary Trade Union Organization, admits that children are most often the main source of inspiration for such sessions. Their sincerity and spontaneity are the best reminder of how important it is today to create a space for children, where they can distract themselves from daily anxieties, feel peace, support, and joy at least for a short period.
The topic of the masterclass was not chosen by chance. Ukrainian folk art is remarkable rich in various painting techniques; each of those carries unique beauty and symbolling meaning. This is reminiscent of the embroidery where every ornament and color holds significance. Vyshyvanka has long been an amulet and a symbol of unity, and Petrykivka painting similarly reflects the worldview of our people, their love for nature, and their striving for harmony.
According to Svitlana Mikhno, Petrykivka painting, like calligraphy, is a deeply emotional art. It is no wonder that the painting process itself – and even contemplating the finished artworks – has an art-therapeutic effect.
After the masterclass, delicious food, warm conversations, and some more time to just be together in a relaxed atmosphere awaited the children. Once again, the Company gave the children a real holiday.
Such activities have already become a good tradition at Energoatom: throughout the year, children of the Company’s employees are brought together for St. Nicholas Day, Easter, the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other themed events. These are not only maker spaces but also sincere moments bringing a sense of family warmth and support.
