Zaporizhzhia NPP Suffers Blackout, Switches to Emergency Diesel Generators

main

At 4:46 p.m., the “Ferosplavna” overhead power line connecting the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP to Ukraine’s integrated power grid was disrupted, leading to a loss of external electricity supply.

Following the loss of off-site power, the plant switched to emergency diesel generators to supply electricity for its essential internal systems.

Every outage of external power poses a direct threat to nuclear and radiation safety and security. A robust off-site power supply is indispensable for the safe operation of the ZNPP and for maintaining the systems responsible for cooling nuclear fuel.

Given the plant's continued russian occupation, the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to be extremely hazardous.

The only way to secure the plant's safe operation is to restore it to the full control of Ukraine and its sole legitimate operator, Energoatom, at the earliest possible opportunity, enabling the facility to operate safely and reliably in accordance with international nuclear safety standards.
