Another rotation of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant. The new team began its activities, taking over the responsibilities of the previous mission. This is the 41st rotational team of experts monitoring nuclear safety and security at Ukrainian nuclear power planNPPs in wartime.
Head of the 40th IAEA rotation reported that during their work at the site of branch “SS SUNPP”, all planned measures to ensure nuclear safety and safeguards had been implemented. According to him, the team held meetings with representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), and discussed the issue of outage at one of the power units of the enterprise: “We have not found any problems related to nuclear safety and security at the site of the branch “SS SUNPP”. We would like to especially emphasize the high level of professional responsibility of the personnel and their readiness to strictly perform their duties in the field of ensuring nuclear safety and security.”
Representatives of the branch “SS SUNPP” made emphasis on the importance of support from international experts in wartime. The presence of observers from the IAEA contributes to strengthening the protection of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure from aggressive actions by russia, while ensuring international control and strengthening confidence in Ukrainian energy security. SUNPP Deputy Chief Engineer for Life Extension Borys Mikitkov also commented: “The enterprise provided comprehensive data on the technical condition of the facilities and the situation around the SUNPP site under martial law. The IAEA management have received and continues to receive official daily reports, therefore they are aware of regular flights of drones and missiles near the energy facility.”
Director General of the branch “SS SUNPP” Vyacheslav Stoyanov stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of IAEA experts at the site in conditions of martial law. He emphasized that the plant management made every possible effort to do that.
During another rotation of IAEA experts, the readiness for fruitful cooperation on both sides was confirmed. Representatives of the 41st team expressed their readiness to continue fulfillment of the important mission – independent monitoring of the radiation situation, inspection of compliance with nuclear protection requirements and delivery of objective information to their management and the international community.
