main

The potential of the Ukrainian-Korean partnership in nuclear sector was discussed by the head of JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom” Pavlo Kovtonyuk and representatives of Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. at the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2026 venue in Gdansk. The parties reviewed the opportunities for enhancing cooperation for Ukrainian nuclear fleet development.

The area for cooperation include the construction of new power units using the Westinghouse AP1000 technology, as well as the completion of nuclear capacities at the Khmelnytskyi NPP site. In particular, Ukraine may consider involving South Korean experience in engineering and construction.

As Pavlo Kovtonyuk noted, the nuclear industry in Ukraine and South Korea are highly developed, so the cooperation between the companies will allow joining efforts to implement innovative solutions that may strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience.

Currently, Hyundai E&C cooperates with Westinghouse within the framework of international implementation of AP1000 technology and it is involved in the construction of new power units at Kozloduy NPP. Therefore, this experience may be useful for achieving Ukraine’s strategic goal – the development of nuclear fleet.

Earlier, in 2024, JSC “NNEGC “Energoatom” and Hyundai E&C signed a Memorandum of Cooperatiion in nuclear sector. The partnership provides for interaction of the parties, in particular in the terms of:

supporting the design, construction, procurement, and commissioning of new nuclear power units in Ukraine;

promoting the development of manufacturing capacities for the localization of equipment production in Ukraine;

cooperating in the field of small modular reactors.
