A pilot project for a new automated radiation monitoring system (ARMS) installation is being implemented at Zaporizhzhya NPP. Due to increasing its capabilities, ARMS will gradually displace the existing «Kiltze» system, intended for continuous radiation monitoring of the nuclear power plant industrial site, the sanitary protection and radiation control zones.

The ARMS system is being installed within the framework of the Complex (Consolidated) Safety Upgrade Program of Power Units of Nuclear Power Plants. The main system function is safety upgrade, improvement of environmental radiation monitoring and radiological safety of the nuclear power plant personnel and the population of the nuclear power plant radiation control zone.

«New automated radiation monitoring system is more informative as compared to the measuring and information system «Kiltze», the head of radiation safety department at ZNPP Serhiy Novoskoltsev said. «It provides direct information on the results of radiation monitoring and the radiation situation as well as forecasts the development of the radiation situation in the control zone online without intermediate processing.»

New system equipment is designed for continuous monitoring in normal service conditions, in emergency and post-accident situations and makes it possible to forecast indicators for the next 14 days.

Innovative equipment can be used not only to analyze the radiation situation at ZNPP but also to monitor the situation far beyond the industrial site.
