On Friday, October 8, 2021, the Atomic Trade Union held a protest action in front of the Ministry of Justice to prevent a critical situation in the nuclear industry of Ukraine.

The crisis was caused by the actions of the State Enforcement Service, which seized the accounts of the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company in virtue of enforcement proceedings on collecting the debt, which does not exist.

Foreign-owned Ukraine-U.S. Joint Venture UKRELEKTROVAT, JSC requires Energoatom to repay a debt of UAH 127.3 mln, out of which the principal makes up only UAH 2.5 mln.

The demonstrators demanded of the Minister of Justice to unlock the accounts of SE NNEGC Energoatom immediately and ensure the smooth operation of the strategic energy company, the immediate opening of criminal proceedings and the arrest of all those involved in the crime, proper legal assessment as well as punishment of State Enforcement Service officials.

«The officials of State Enforcement Service of Ukraine unreasonably blocked the financial and economic activities of a strategic state-run enterprise, which generates 55% of all electricity in Ukraine,» stated the head of the primary trade union organization of SE NNEGC «Energoatom» Oleksiy Lych. «Such actions jeopardize the stable operation of the national power system ahead of the heating season.»

Representatives of the trade unions of four nuclear power plants of Ukraine and separated subdivisions of Energoatom expressed an explicit position of the NNEGC labour collective: due to the blocked accounts of the Company, all necessary measures for the safe operation of nuclear power units of Ukrainian NPPs, as well as timely payment for fresh nuclear fuel procurement, salary payment, fulfillment of social obligations, payment of loans, taxes, etc. were compromised.

«The trade unions of the nuclear industry are appealing to the authorities to intervene immediately in this situation,» said Mykhailo Huk, head of the primary trade union organization of the Khmelnytskyy NPP. «Illegal actions of officials of the State Enforcement Service can lead to a critical situation in the nuclear industry, which will immediately affect the sustainable operation of the energy system.»

The trade union leaders are convinced that the blocking of Energoatom's accounts in favor of the company that has bought out the non-existent debts from the Russian TVEL, JSC can be regarded as well-targeted sabotage.

At the beginning of the heating season, in a situation when the country has a shortage of coal at thermal power plants due to the occupation of part of the territory of Donbas, it is Energoatom that was given a task to ensure the operation of the maximum number of nuclear power plants units, which will provide an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the general  public and industry.

Energoatom’s labour collective expressed support and solidarity with the protest action held by trade unions.
