The first stage of the CSFSF was opened
On December 22, with the participation of the management of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”, the representatives of Holtec International (USA), other companies taking part in the implementation of the project, and with the participation of media representatives the first start-up complex of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) was opened.
Under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the management of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” decided to limit the activities related to the completion of the construction of the CSFSF first stage by a study tour for media representatives to the Storage Facility site. The purpose of the event is to inform the Ukrainian public about the compliance of the new nuclear power facility with high national and world requirements for nuclear and radiation safety.
During the visit to CSFSF the journalists were convinced of the facility’s full readiness to receive spent nuclear fuel from Ukrainian NPPs for storage.
At the moment, the construction of all civil structures and infrastructure for receiving and storing spent nuclear fuel has been completed, as well as the site itself where the containers with spent fuel will be located. Commissioning and testing of equipment and components supplied by Holtec have begun. The operation of the first start-up complex starts in May 2021 after the completion of the construction of a 43-kilometer railway track to the Storage Facility, which will connect it to the railway network of Ukraine. The construction of other 14 start-up complexes of CSFSF will be completed by 2040 in parallel filling the Storage Facility site with containers with spent nuclear fuel.
Over the next 100 years spent nuclear fuel from three Ukrainian nuclear power plants – Rivne, Khmelnytskyi and South-Ukraine will be stored at CSFSF. (Zaporizhzhya NPP has its own on-site spent fuel storage facility).
