President of Ukraine: the CSFSF will assure real independence for the nuclear generation of Ukraine
Finalizing of the construction of the first start-up complex of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility will assure real independence of any geopolitical whims for the nuclear generation of Ukraine, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized in his greetings on the occasion of Power Engineers' Day, published on President’s official web-site.
"It is fitting that the construction of the first start-up complex of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone is going to come to the end on Power Engineers' Day. The facility operation will assure real independence of any geopolitical whims for the nuclear generation of Ukraine", Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed.
He reminded that Ukrainian NPPs annually generate more than 50% of the total electricity consumed in Ukraine. "Nuclear generation needed domestic storage for spent nuclear fuel to ensure a steady operation. Finally, it has been realized," the Head of state added.
President noted that cutting edge safe technologies for nuclear fuel handling will be introduced in Ukraine due to the CSFSF construction. "The monopoly dependence on the export of spent fuel from Ukrainian nuclear power plants to the Russian Federation is being broken. The state will be able to save hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Ukraine will always appreciate the assistance in implementing this project provided by our western friends," Zelenskyy summed up.
