One step closer to energy independence – Ukrainian TV channels about the opening of the first stage of CSFSF
The strategic importance of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) for energy security of Ukraine became one of the key topics of news broadcasts on December 22, 2020 on the leading TV channels of Ukraine.
In the stories on the opening of the first start-up complex of CSFSF, the construction of which was completed on time by SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”, it is particularly noted that since spring 2021 Ukraine will store spent nuclear fuel from domestic nuclear power plants at the site of its own Central Storage Facility. The beginning of CSFSF operation will allow Ukraine to save up to 200 million dollars annually, which Energoatom previously paid to Russia for the services of processing and temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel from three Ukrainian nuclear power plants – Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South-Ukraine.
The story of Inter Channel separately emphasizes that thanks to CSFSF Ukraine will finally get rid of its dependence on Russian enterprises that process and store spent nuclear fuel. “Spent nuclear fuel will be sent here only form Ukrainian NPPs. By railroad. Like this, in containers made of high quality stainless steel. American technology. It is used by the world’s leading countries”, - says the channel’s correspondent Ihor Levenok.
“The first stage of the major project in nuclear industry of Ukraine has been completed. All the processes are robot-aided. This is the joint project of Ukraine and the United States”, says in his story Artem Dzhepko the correspondent of “Ukraine. Today”. The TV channel also emphasizes that construction and commissioning of country’s own Storage Facility will relieve Ukraine of monopoly dependence on Russia in the field of processing and temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel.
This May the Spent Fuel Storage Facility will start operating in Ukraine; it was built in the Chernobyl Zone using American technology, informs Nataliia Kulyk the correspondent of Facts ICTV. For Ukraine, it is a strategically important facility, because all these years we have been exporting spent fuel from NPPs to Russia and pay a lot of money to the aggressor country for this.
Let us recall that on December 22 with the participation of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” management, representatives of Holtec International (USA) and other companies participating in the implementation of the project, as well as the media representatives the first start-up complex of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) was opened.
Under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the management of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” decided to limit the activities related to the completion of the construction of the CSFSF first stage by a study tour for media representatives to the Storage Facility site. The purpose of the event is to inform the Ukrainian public about the compliance of the new nuclear power facility with high national and world requirements for nuclear and radiation safety.
