Dynamic development of nuclear industry is one of the main conditions to ensure energy independence of Ukraine and sustainable growth of the country’s economy. The country's energy security is enhanced by using of modern technologies. Therefore, innovative development is one of the priorities for SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”. The use of modern technologies and innovations in the nuclear industry will ensure further improvement of reliability, economic efficiency and environmental safety.

Strategic research and development in the field of nuclear energy development and innovative fuel cycles is carried out by the Separated Subdivision "Scientific and Technical Center".

Key studies and innovative projects of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”

  • Development of analytical materials for a long-term concept of spent nuclear fuel management of Ukrainian NPPs.

As a part of activity, a comparative assessment of 8 types of Ukrainian nuclear fuel cycle for the long-term perspective was carried out based on the following reactors (1) VVER and LWR, (2) VVER, LWR, CANDU, (3) VVER, LWR and FR.

The comparative assessment of the nuclear fuel cycle types has been carried out for a short-term (until 2035) and long-term (until 2100) development scenarios. In the long-term perspective until 2100, based on the analysis results, the optimum version of the power system development is assumed to be “open”.

  • Development of the materials of a Long-Term Program for the Development of Nuclear Energy in Ukraine

Based on the execution of the order of the SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” “On the Development of a Long-Term Program for the Development of Nuclear Energy of Ukraine”, the activities are carried out on the “Development of materials of the Long-Term Program for the Development of Nuclear Energy of Ukraine”. This work is aimed at ensuring the state’s energy security, efficient, safe and competitive production of electricity and heat energy at nuclear power plants, increasing the stability and reliability of the unified power system of Ukraine, reducing the consumption of organic fuel resources and the man-made load on the environment. Based on a predictive analysis and comparison of scenarios for the development of the Ukrainian power system and the structure of electricity consumption, a generalized optimal scenario for the development of nuclear energy in Ukraine for the long-term period is determined. The assessment is carried out taking into account the development of alternative generation types.

  • Research, evaluation and feasibility study of the selection of promising nuclear technologies for the construction of new NPP power units in Ukraine

In the framework of the “Development of materials of the Long-Term Program for the Development of Nuclear Energy in Ukraine”, the “Research, evaluation and feasibility study for the selection of promising nuclear technologies for the construction of new nuclear power units in Ukraine” was carried out. The aim of the study is to select a list of reactor technologies for the construction of replacement and new NPPs in Ukraine after 2020 at the sites of those that are now in operation, and evolutionary units of generation III + (among them small modular reactors of the SMR-160 type (HOLTEC) and NuScale (NuScale Power, LLC, USA).

  • Development of the State Economic Program on the Spent Nuclear Fuel Management of the national nuclear power plants for the period until 2025

The goal of the State Economic Program on the Spent Nuclear Fuel Management of the national nuclear power plants for the period until 2025 is to address the complex industrial issues related to spent nuclear fuel management of national NPPs, enhance the economic efficiency of spent nuclear fuel management outline, establish frame conditions and directions for safe and cost-effective spent fuel management of operating NPPs in Ukraine.

  • Cooperation with American company Holtec International regarding the study of possibilities to implement Small Modular Reactors SMR-160

In order to analyze the regulatory framework of the SMR-160 project to determine its compliance with the requirements of regulatory documents of Ukraine, as well as for the future safety justification of the small modular reactor projects, the Technical Report “Development of approaches to a comparative analysis of foreign and Ukrainian regulatory requirements for the design and safety justification of the nuclear installations” was developed.

As part of the expansion of cooperation on the introduction of SMR-160 technology in Ukraine, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” and Studsvik Scandpower GmbH (Sweden) on July 17, 2019. Studsvik provides methodological support and transfer of computer codes for safety analysis of SMR-160. A Confidentiality Agreement has been concluded between SE “NNEGC “Energoatom” and Studsvik Scandpower GmbH.

In September 2019, the first kick-off meeting was held at the office of Holtec International with the participation of representatives of SE “NNEGC “Energoatom”, Holtec International and Studsvik Scandpower (Sweden), dedicated to the formation of a list of activities and directions for the implementation of the project of CMS5 software verification for neutron-physical calculations. The CMS5 software will be used to prepare the initial data as part of the development of the SMR-160 low power (modular) reactor design.
